No ano em que terminou a licenciatura em Antropologia (1982) foi selecionada para integrar a equipa de investigação do projeto "Espace et Développement : développement spatial et identités régionales au Portugal". Esse fato veio a determinar de forma significativa a sua carreira, por um lado, porque lhe permitiu integrar uma equipa de investigação internacional, num tempo em que essa possibilidade era, em Portugal, muito reduzida, e, por outro, porque determinou a sua área de especialização inicial: a Antropologia do Espaço.
