ALEXANDRA MEDARU (b. 1988; Bucharest) is a writer of fantasy, SF and realist literature (prose, drama, poetry), a literary critic and editor. She is the editor-in-chief of the magazine P(RO)EZIA and a permanent contributor to the online magazine EgoPHobia, where she runs two columns: Cultural Arena: The Book and the Movie (as a literary critic) and Suitable / Recommended Readings by Alexandra (as an editor).

Her poetry, prose, critical studies, and editorials have appeared in the publications Apostrof, Argos, Echinox, eCreator.ro, EgoPHobia, Noise Poetry, O mie de semne, Parnas XXI, Postmodern, P(RO)EZIA, Puterea – Cotidian Național, Revista Online de SF&F Galaxia 42, Revista de povestiri, Revista de suspans, Select News, UtopIQa, and on the Queero platform. Among her notable works are: The Sin (2013), An Encounter with a Man, a Satyr, and a Tomcat (2016), Gomes Leal – Poet of Satan or of Christ? (2016), To Be or Not to Be a Writer… (2017), The Beings of the Latter Night (2017), The Great Union and the Culture of Eternal Influence (2018), Henrik Ibsen – “Peer Gynt” (2019), The Madonna with Tears of Blood (fragment, 2020), The Hidden Symphony (fragment, 2021), and A Verse Like a Farewell (2022). Her poems have been translated into Spanish and English and published in Chile, Spain, Mexico, and the USA.

In 2014 she was awarded the Second Prize at Inspired – Ideas Competition, Drama section, for the work Contraband in Black and White.

Several references to her overall literary activity have come from acclaimed critics and writers:

From several points of view, Alexandra writes a kind of poetry that is different from that of her generation. For her, the sought-after prosaicism, the blurring of affects, or the ghost of an exhibited miserabilism mean very little. Her texts sometimes have a ritual aggressiveness and could be dedicated to the Gnostic divinity Sophia, who was at once priestess and prostitute. At other times, the figure of Lilith rises to the surface: like the character Vanessa Ives, the poet clasps God’s left hand. If I were to place the volume, I would situate it at the intersection of post-classicism (because it is constructed in a somewhat ahistorical way that sends me back to the 19th century; moreover, it ignores the developments of modern poetry from the past century, which is also its charm), post-romanticism (you can almost see Emily Dickinson and the Brontë sisters in the background), and a kind of para-symbolism (Baudelaire’s orientation toward the morbid character of existence generated our poetic universe).

Alexandra’s poems do not forgive. They pierce your flesh, your bones, and your senses. You cannot nestle comfortably within them, yet their voice strikes you with impressive force. In the claustrophobic universe woven by the author, demons and demiurges seem to feast at the same table, gathering crumbs of soul and drinking blood that never turns into holy wine. It is poisonous; it smells of death and betrayal. It recalls two bodies that once quivered in the same rhythm.
Where does the genesis of love end and where does its disintegration begin? The gods have grown weary, weighed down by the burden of their own creation, and humans have turned into “puppets of destiny.” Meanings have overflowed their banks because there is no one left to answer the questions.
