In addition to being Associate Professor of History and Arabic at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, Carolyn Baugh is a mom to two girls who constantly surprise her, and a devoted dog-owner to Carmen the Mutt.

She holds a master's degree (2008) and a PhD (2011) from the University of Pennsylvania in Arabic and Islamic Studies. Her academic focus has been gender issues in early Islamic law. At Gannon, she directs the refugee oral history program and also the Women's Studies program.

She believes she was probably meant to be a jazz pianist in some smoky Parisian bar.

Adulting is not her strong point.

“I am overwhelmed. I am the most discomfited of dancers. Simultaneously chillingly I am certain that the wedding guests sense it to be a sad occasion yet all are in desperate conspiracy to produce a joyful atmosphere. They dance madly. As though ... as though if they were to stop and cast a thoughtful eye on the bride and groom the illusion would be dispelled. The party dresses and hairspray and starched collars and lipsticked lips would melt away and all present would be left standing in the rags of Huda's despair.”
Carolyn Baugh, The View from Garden City

“No woman is ever empty," Nayna said. "You are life. When it is fragile, when it is miserable, when it is beautiful, you brim with it.”
Carolyn Baugh, The View from Garden City

Andrea Kinsley Hi Carolyn- Thank you for your review. I will add Dragon Fighter to my "to read" list because I value the opinion of an author that I read and enjoyed. I wish there were more hours in the day as my list is ever growing! Andrea

Marie I checked out God of Small Things and love the style. I'm having to read it in very, very small doses right now though and that just isn't working. I'll try to get a copy to take to Mexico with me. Are you in Erie now. We had our book discussion on Jhumpa Lahiri and no one could remember any of the details or the stories. Everyone remembered liking them though. I think the holiday season has just interfered too deeply in people's lives.

Andrea Kinsley I LOVED A View from Garden City by Carolyn Baugh, and I was not alone! My book group loved it. The women's stories were profound and the characters were memorable. It made for a great discussion and opened our eyes to life in Egypt.

Marie First of all, everything else I read pales next to View from Garden City by Carolyn Baugh. What a book! Poetry in prose. I so want to visit Egypt now. I want to meet these women.
