“And the sheep did seem much easier to convince. Sheep are sheep. They listened politely and nodded their agreement. But when Martha asked when they would start, suddenly their attention waned, and off they went. Over the next few days, Martha found that “eat-much-less” was even less popular than Petunia’s one question. “Why would we want to eat lots less?” asked one. “Every mouthful less is another mouthful for our young ones.” “Yes,” another responded. “But why would we steal food from ourselves?” Quite a few animals decided to think about it by running off to the feed, since the thought of starving made them hungrier. They didn’t want to leave it too late.”

“Hilda considered the problem in a different way. “It’s just too hot,” she said. “It doesn’t matter why.” “Of course, it matters,” huffed Felicity. “No,” said Hilda. “Fixing it is what matters.” Regardless of whether the change was animal-made or farmer-made, there was a problem with the barn either way. On and on went the arguments about this. Hilda finally realized something. “It doesn’t matter if we agree,” she said. “Because we can’t ration the heat anyway.”
