Linda Slothouber is a Life Member, and an elected Board Member, of the Jane Austen Society of North America. Following a career at a leading management and technology consulting firm, she has written for several magazines and journals, contributing articles on antiques, architectural and industrial heritage, and Jane Austen. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature from the University of Virginia and a Master’s degree in Administration from the University of Maryland University College.

That's my official bio. I've been asked, too, to write about what brought me to... my particular take on Jane Austen. That's my official bio. I've been asked, too, to write about what brought me to... my particular take on Jane Austen. In my professional career, I looked at how organizations work and how people interact, communicate, and contribute to shared goals. I've written about the history of groundbreaking companies with their roots in the Georgian era, such as Wedgwood and the cotton mills of Richard Arkwright. Personally, I am of the first generation of my family, on both sides, going back to the 1700s, that was NOT born on a farm; I can't say I possess any agricultural skills myself, but I am deeply interested in rural life. Additionally, my husband is a machinist and maker of specialized scientific instruments, and I've taken classes in bricklaying and stonecarving just for fun. Our combined interests have led me to learn a lot about various trades, particularly traditional ones. When we travel to England, we visit Jane Austen sites, country houses, and industrial heritage sites, and we go to fairs to see plowing competitions, demonstrations of old crafts, etc. All of this comes together in my interest in the working world of Jane Austen's time.
