“17. When my coparent calls or texts, my child doesn’t want to communicate with them. How should I handle this? Telephone or digital contact with the non-custodial parent is a common problem among dual-household families, even when RRP is not occurring. Family routines are busy. Dinner is happening. The kids are at an activity or in the bathtub. Everyone is in the car where there is no privacy. Even when a custodial parent makes it a priority for the child to communicate with the non-custodial parent, it is hard to get it to happen reliably. Our experience is that even with coparents who are operating in cooperative or parallel coparenting models, about 10 to 20 percent of the non-custodial parent’s attempts for phone and digital contact do not work on any given day.
