A graduate of the École Polytechnique and a mining engineer, Pierre-Eugène Lamairesse was a road and bridge engineer. He worked in India on dams and irrigation in Pondicherry and Karaikal between 1860 and 1866. He ended his career in Algeria.

He has translated works from South India, written on hydrology in France, Algeria and India, on Japanese civilization, on the Koran and Buddha. He died on April 17, 1898 in Marengo.
