"What kind of books do you like to read?"

Schopenhauer was right when he said, "I've never known any trouble that an hour's reading didn't assuage". Reading a great book uproots, reorients and comforts usually simultaneously somehow.

I like confessional writing that focuses on a single narrator, typically using the world as a tool for exploring their own thoughts and perspectives à la Michael Burkard, Sharon Olds, Mary Rufele and Hayden Carruth. I tend to prefer realism being manipulated by fantasy (low-fantasy) rather than fantasy being the starting point. Short story wise, I like how David Means writes and view his style and writing mannerisms as exemplary.

I like complex, long form essays on arcane, left-field areas or subjects (e.g David

The Transformation of Cities: Urban Theory and Urban Cities The Transformation of Cities: Urban Theory and Urban Cities by David C. Thorns

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

In this review, I will share some critical thoughts I had of various chapters, hoping to engage in a dialog, at least with myself on these key issues. There is a lot to discuss and the book does have a lot of merits, in particular the author is clear and concise when developing arguments. In my Read more of this blog post »

Selected Poems of Lord Byron by Lord Byron
“She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow’d to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all
A heart whose love is innocent!”
Lord Byron

“I’d cut my soul into a million different pieces just to form a constellation to light your way home. I’d write love poems to the parts of yourself you can’t stand. I’d stand in the shadows of your heart and tell you I’m not afraid of your dark.”
Andrea Gibson

Dorothy Parker
“You can't teach an old dogma new tricks.”
Dorothy Parker, The Algonquin Wits

Emily Dickinson
“If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can warm me, I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. These are the only ways I know it. Is there any other way?”
Emily Dickinson, Selected Letters

Franz Kafka
“I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we're reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us. That is my belief.”
Franz Kafka

Tennessee Williams
“We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call; no way out, just the upstairs window to look out of while the fire burns the house down with us trapped, locked in it.”
Tennessee Williams, The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore

W.H. Auden
“A professor is one who talks in someone else's sleep.”
