Sofia Nădejde s-a născut pe 14 septembrie 1865, la Botoșani, într-o familie de țărani liberi. Părinții, Profira și Vasile Băncilă, au mai avut, în afară de Sofia, alți patru copii – Sofia era cea mai mare, iar cel mai mic a fost Octav, viitorul pictor.

Se impune ca personalitate a mișcării feministe, intrând în dispute cu unele dintre cele mai cunoscute personalități ale epocii. De notorietate este o polemică cu Titu Maiorescu, purtată în paginile publicației Contemporanul.
