Jürgen Basedow is a German legal scholar, since 1997 director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg and a professor at the University of Hamburg. He studied at the University of Hamburg, the University of Geneva and the University of Pavia. In 1981 he earned a Master of Laws degree of the Harvard University. In 1987 he got an appointment as professor at the University of Augsburg, where he was dean from 1993 to 1994. From 1995 until 1997 he taught at the Free University of Berlin.
