Pamela Kay Hawkins changed hats several times on a daily basis in her long career as a freelance writer. In those days she wrote under the last name Broughton, and under that name published several picture books for Golden Books, a division of Western Publishing, now sadly gone.

After earning a BA in English Literature, with a double minor in history and journalism, Hawkins continued to further her academic career at the University of Oklahoma, earning an MA in (a very long degree title) Journalism/Mass Communication with an Emphasis in Creative Writing, a degree which is now called an MFA. Either you are a writer or you're not, and if you are, then the question becomes akin to asking what's the best thing about being me, which I won't answer. If you're asking about the fame, money, etc., I wouldn't know. But if you're asking about the best thing about being a published author? I think the moment your published book arrives and it's become something separate from you that others can enjoy. It's kind of like watching your children become adults and successful in the world.(less)

Where Have I Been?

I must apologize for not writing on this blog for a while, but I am not a daily blogger. I tend to avoid the Internet as much as possible, so that I can write, read, paint, and actually talk to people IRL. (Just to let you know, I am no longer on Facebook, but I kept my Twitter account, so that when I just can’t take it anymore, I can jump in and out quickly.)

I am still available here, so I’d love

“All of us have a shadow man dogging our steps that we cannot shake, no matter how hard we try. He reminds us at our best that we are not as good as we appear to be; he bites at our heel with guilt when we find ourselves behaving far beneath our own expectations. That is the human condition. That is why we yearn so for redemption.”
Pamela Kay Hawkins, A Defect of Character: A Novel

“It is one of the defects of my character that I cannot altogether dislike anyone who makes me laugh.”
W. Somerset Maugham, The Moon and Sixpence

“Courage, dear heart.”
C.S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.”
Mark Twain

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
C.S. Lewis

Pamela Kay Hawkins Some of you may have noticed my slow reading progress; it's not intentional. My eyes have been bothering me a lot in the last few weeks, but now I can barely get through a chapter before the words are nothing but a blur. Hang in there with me; I shall do all I promised, but more slowly than I'd hoped.
