Ruth Olshan wurde 1970 in Moskau geboren. Ein Jahr später emigrierte die Familie nach Israel, 1974 kam sie nach Deutschland. Aufgewachsen in Berlin studierte Olshan über ein Stipendium in Leeds (UK) und Köln Filmregie und Drehbuch. Sie arbeitet als freie Autorin und Filmemacherin für Dokumentar- und Spielfilm. Für ihr Werk wurde Olshan mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Ihre Erfahrung als Drehbuchautorin und Filmemacherin bereichern ihr Schreiben von Kinder- und Jugendliteratur.
