Plot and Queer Structure

Discovery and Redefinition: Creating Openness and Agency via Queer Growth Routes The following is the graduate class I gave on queer narrative structures and how and why the queer writer might choose to depart from conventions.   So picture, for a second, a sidewalk. “There is a part of this story that will always be, mostly, a love poem. But it's the kind sung in a key you and I know so well: adoration galvanized by futility. The sweet apricot that is impossible to catch, the beloved with a one-way flight offshore-each could be a stanza in our own personal ghazal.”
Sarah Cypher, The Skin and Its Girl

“But what was death to me, when it was my first act in life? Death looked like the house of the body opening, returning to a wider place: that place of confusion and strange beauty.”
Sarah Cypher, The Skin and Its Girl
tags: death

“Do you know what it's like to be bewitched? Your mind bends. Your entire life shrinks to the size of a small room. The imagination is a fever. You can't stand it. Nobody can stand it-that's the point of falling in love.”
Sarah Cypher, The Skin and Its Girl

“The woman who survives intact and happy must be at once tender and tough.”
Maya Angelou, Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now

“We do not measure a culture by its output of undisguised trivialities but by what it claims as significant.”
Neil Postman, Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business

“I think the mystery of art lies in this, that artists’ relationship is essentially with their work — not with power, not with profit, not with themselves, not even with their audience.”
Ursula K. Le Guin

“She would not exploit anyone. People would not observed by irony run amok. The audience would not have their superiority confirmed. Somehow they would feel like everyone was in it together.”
Jane McCafferty

“The industrial world destroys nature not because it doesn’t love it but because it is not afraid of it.”
Mary Ruefle

Ditto! I'm just getting into Goodreads, despite having signed up a while ago. Gotta admit, hanging around writers/readers online beats the cacophony on Twitter by a long shot.
