Kate Garchinsky’s first word was “bird.” Growing up, when she wasn’t in her room drawing pictures of trees, birds and squirrels, you might find her perched like a bird in the branches of the japanese maple tree on her front lawn, whispering to the squirrels. Forty years later, Kate has finally figured out how to combine her love for art and nature as a children’s book illustrator.

Kate studied children’s book illustration at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she received the Thornton Oakley Medal for Excellence in Illustration in 1997. Her children’s book debut, The Secret Life of the Red Fox, was listed as a 2017 NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Book, a Eureka!
