I grew up in East Los Angeles, where, to build a family, my Mexican-American parents put down new roots. I earned degrees in English at Stanford and then Columbia; much later I earned another MA, in music, at Queens College of the City University of New York. Following a move to San Francisco in 1981, I began a career in English teaching at Bay Area high schools. I live in the City with Stephen Goldston, my partner of forty-five years. We married in 2008—the year I retired from teaching and began writing poetry.

“Hathwell is writing with quiet intensity about significant things.”
Dana Gioia
