Tom Johnston was a prominent Scottish socialist and politician. He was a member of the Labour Party, Member of Parliament (MP) for Stirling and Clackmannan, and Secretary of State for Scotland from 1941 to 1945.

A long-standing supporter of Home Rule, he was able to persuade Churchill of the need to counter the nationalist threat and created a Scottish Council of State and a Council on Industry as institutions to devolve power away from Whitehall.

Johnston's greatest legacy was the creation of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board which brought electric power to rural communities in the Highlands and Islands.

Publications include Our Scots Noble Families (1909) and A History of the Working Classes in Scotland (1920).

“And in this beautiful land of ours, the free people who inhabit it, and who have paid such a high price for their freedom, will, in the better days that are to be, surely insist that the architecture of their buildings, public and private, shall be worthy of them.”
Thomas Johnston, Building Scotland - Past and Future

“Show the people that our Old Nobility is not noble, that its lands are stolen lands - stolen either by force or fraud; show people that the title-deeds are rapine, murder, massacre, cheating, or court harlotry; dissolve the halo of divinity that surrounds the hereditary title; let the people clearly understand that our present House of Lords is composed largely of descendants of successful pirates and rogues; do these things and you will shatter the Romance that keeps the nation numb and spellbound while privilege picks its pocket.”
Thomas Johnston, Our Scots noble families
