Probably the original inspiration for the carachter of Max Estrella in Ramón Valle Inclán's "Luces de Bohemia", he was a clear example of what spanish bohemian life was.

Son of a greek trader, he was born in Seville. He first tried to study teology in Malaga, but he soon realized that was not his field. Later, in 1877, he studied for lawyer in Granada. In 1885 he moved to Madrid and started his career as a writer and journalist.

After publishing his main works, in the year 1890, he moved to Paris because some problems with the police. There he met famous writers and poets such Alphonse Daudet and Paul Verlaine. Those were his most happy years. In Paris he translated french authors into spanish and also worked in a publisher.
