A perfectly normal childhood and adolescence (assuming it to be over, which my wife will not confirm) in rural Arkansas, then Maine.

Indifferent student; flunked out of Univ. of Maine in 1967 at the height of Viet Nam war. Expected to be drafted but joined the Border Patrol a year later and spent my time chasing our little brown brothers around El Paso rather than Saigon.

Spent over 30 years in the Border Patrol and its parent organization, the old Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), now ICE. Worked in Texas, Florida, Alaska, Michigan, Colorado, Washington State, Puerto Rico, and back to Washington, where I retired and now reside. It was a good career and I'd like to think the taxpayers got their money's worth out of me.
