美國暢銷作家，寫過無數膾炙人口的青少年小說，屢屢獲獎。最有代表性的作品為《分解人》四部曲，此書獲得超過三十個獎項。二〇一五年他以描寫精神疾病的小說Challenger Deep榮獲美國國家書卷獎的殊榮。其他作品包括Downsiders、Full Tilt、Bruiser、The Schwa Was Here（獲波士頓全球報－號角圖書獎）……等，不勝枚舉。他的多部作品改編成電影的計畫正在進行中。

尼爾是一位充滿魅力的說故事高手。他曾於加州大學爾灣分校雙主修心理學與劇場，畢業後不到一年就簽下第一份出版合約。歐森·史考特·卡德曾邀請他撰寫《戰爭遊戲》的平行小說（可惜後來因時程關係合作不成）。他也編寫電影和電視劇劇本，甚至還設計遊戲。以他的多才多藝、高產量創作，以及通俗性與思想性兼具的作品特色，他堪稱是當今青少年文學界最活躍的人物之一。
