The youngest of five children, Douglas Smith grew up in rural West Virginia where he was raised by a divorced mother who cleaned houses during the day and studied nursing at night. As a child he would help his mother clean houses by sweeping and dusting while she performed the more detailed house cleaning chores. When he became a teen, he began cleaning doctor’s offices and washing dishes at a local restaurant to earn money.
