William Neill was an Ayrshire-born poet who wrote in Scottish and Irish Gaelic, Scots and English. He was a major contributing voice to the Scottish Renaissance. He lived in Galloway and taught English at Castle Douglas High School.

Neill was educated at Ayr Academy. He joined the RAF in 1938 and rose to the rank of Master Navigator. After service, he took an Honours degree in Celtic studies and English at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1968.

His first collection of poems was published when he was in his fifties; Selected Poems 1969-1992 by Canongate in 1994. Caledonian Cramboclink was published by Luath Press in 2002.
