Such police monitoring can never be legitimate because all political views are legal in a free society—all of them, absolutely, without exception. The police should concern themselves exclusively with actual violations of laws. When the police monitor and/or entrap persons based on their political opinions, they are siding with one political faction against another, and they thus slip into an abyss of their own excavation and become the secret police of a totalitarian system.
