I can still remember the day I got my hands on my first big novel—a copy of Wilbur Smith’s Birds of Prey. It was a gift from my parents on my 11th birthday. I wasn’t really too pleased. Eleven year olds want RC cars and CD players, not books. Such a waste of the annual big present. Not wanting to seem ungrateful however, I started reading it immediately (being on a camping trip, I didn’t have much else to do). Two days later the tome was done, and I was hooked.

As soon I got home I raided the tiny local library in the small South African town I lived, and over the next two years worked my way through almost all of Smith’s 30+ novels. It wasn’t long before poor Mr Smith couldn’t keep up any more, and I was forced to branch out. This is when I ...more
