“There was a time when it would have been true and I wanted you to feel the fear, to understand what it was like in those dark and deadly days. When to read a book was to become an enemy of the state.”
David Farr, The Book of Stolen Dreams

“Oh, you’re shaking! Please take my blanket. It smells slightly of salad cream due to an unfortunate accident with a baguette earlier today.”
David Farr, The Book of Stolen Dreams

“Rachel was impressed by the calm efficiency of Laetitia’s uncle. She tried to understand how a man so apparently good could work for a man so palpably bad. Grown-ups are just strange, she thought. Something happens to them. Perhaps it’s to do with what Mother used to call “the moral compass.” Some lose it for a while. Some forever.”
David Farr, The Book of Stolen Dreams
