Deborah McCollum was born in Merced, California. She currently resides in Elk Grove, California and teaches high school physical education. She has her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degree in Kinesiology.

Deborah began writing her first novel, Chasing Hope, while studying for her Bachelor's degree in 2010 and decided to self-publish in 2016 after Chasing Hope was sent off to a former college professor to help edit the novel. Deborah had not originally planned on becoming a self-published author but felt inspired through drastic life events and experiences.
