Raúl Prebisch nació en San Miguel de Tucumán, ciudad del interior de la República Argentina, en abril de 1901. Realizó estudios de economía en la Universidad de Buenos Aires entre 1918 y 1922. En 1923 comenzó su carrera docente como profesor de Economía Política en la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas de la Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires, cátedra que ejerció hasta 1948.

Entre 1930 y 1943 se desempeñó como funcionario público, en el Banco Nación y luego en el Ministerio de Hacienda. A partir de 1935 fue uno de los fundadores y primer Director del Banco Central de la República Argentina, cargo que ocupó hasta 1943.
