一九四三年出生於荷蘭，他寫作的原因很單純，只是想要逃離醫生生涯中時而令人心酸無奈的時刻，於是他建構了一個以動物為主角的奇想世界，讓人感到熟悉，又奇幻。

一九八四年，他發表了第一本動物故事選集，接著又連續出版了三本續集。一九九五出版商將所有的故事集結成冊，書名《Misschien zij alles》（也許，他們什麼都知道）。故事裡著名的主角，螞蟻、松鼠、大象、熊……一一出現。

敦．德勒根的作品在荷蘭獲得廣大的迴響，不僅僅是小孩喜歡，連大人也愛不釋手。他的書已經成為經典，定期再版，也是流連文學咖啡館的文人最喜歡的讀物。
