“Lea studied the lines of his face. In them she saw again every expression he had ever made--every smile and frown and sigh--saw how they jostled for room on the canvas of his skin, how they'd etched their fleeting existence into his flesh, how they filled it up, made their mark, carved and pulled and twisted until there was no space left.”
Rachel Heng, Suicide Club

“It was elegant in its simplicity, shameless in its daring, as most of the Gah Men's plans were. Squatters? Move them. Communists? Jail them. Housing? Build it. Even the earth itself was deemed malleable, a cost-benefit analysis conducted, a decision made. The rest was execution.”
Rachel Heng, The Great Reclamation

“For the most part, the things that had happened in her early childhood were the ones that could be counted on to stay put. They were the permanent fixtures, firmly lodged into the architecture of the mind, screwed to the baseboards.”
Rachel Heng, Suicide Club
