“Bravery is not the absence of fear but the ability to conquer our fears and choose to do the right thing.”

“Depth typically requires time. Diving deeply into something, into anything—a book, a relationship, a new skill—is never instantaneous. Since everything in the culture has become instantaneous, and thoughts that cannot be communicated in less than ten seconds have become intensely boring for so many, her attention span has been whittled down to nearly nothing. She has begun to subconsciously fall prey to the mindset that a life of depth just isn’t worth the time and trouble it takes, and this will also keep her on the surface of life as a whole. These developments, along with our cunning work to suck our subjects into their screens, have helped us tremendously in this arena. Follow me closely here since this is what it all boils down to: When your subject is no longer comfortable with depth, she’ll no longer be comfortable with the Enemy. An aversion to depth will develop into an aversion to Him. His vastness is the very definition of depth, and we want her to want none of it at all. It’s most important that she not bring any feelings to Him—the good, the bad, or the ugly. She must not turn to the Enemy for help in sorting through them. We must keep her turned totally into herself. Remember—always running away.”

“In keeping things as on-the-surface and avoidant as possible, you want to discourage her from vulnerability—in relationships, in conversations, in her family. When everything is kept at surface level, there’ll be a sense of frustration within her, as with all of them. They’ll crave depth, but our careful work will keep them from achieving it. The ones who push past the uncomfortable to ask deeper questions will be the ones seen as weird and intrusive. Depth is awkward, uncomfortable. We take great delight in the fact that so many of them feel awkward speaking to anyone at all anymore. They call a vast majority of their dialogue now “small talk.” It’s not really small but more “surface talk.” They all have so much in common in the depths of who they are, but most don’t know how to connect with this naturally or effortlessly. So few know how to ask any questions or begin any conversations that have meaning. They stay on the surface—right where we want them. Lonely, miserable, running away.”
