I started on a farm in Redmond, Washington, had a wonderful English teacher in a Seattle high school and went on scholarship to Barnard College where I had two amazing women teachers. While married and raising children, I lived in Washington, Oregon, California, Greece, Delaware, and New York. I have three grandchildren. My oldest granddaughter is in the Peace Corps in Benin working in a women’s health clinic. My partner of fifteen years, a renowned printmaker, Judith Anderson, died in 2008.

For twenty-six years I have lived a few miles from the north shore of Long Island where I swim in the summer and walk in the winter. I am a fierce supporter of Obama.
