“The house smelled musty and damp, and a little sweet, as if it were haunted by the ghosts of long-dead cookies.”

“The connected economy of ideas demands that we contribute initiative. And yet we resist, because our lizard brain, the one that lives in fear, relentlessly exaggerates the cost of being wrong.”

“Re-vision – the act of looking back, of seeing with fresh eyes, of entering an old text from a new critical direction – is for woman more than a chapter in cultural history: it is an act of survival. Until we understand the assumptions in which we are drenched we cannot know ourselves. And this drive to self-knowledge, for women, is more than a search for identity: it is part of our refusal of the self-destructiveness of male-dominated society.”

Hi Dick - I'll check them out. I haven't heard of the first two, but I love "Bird by Bird." Thanks for the recommendations.

I want to recommend 'Jewelweed, by David Rhodes. It is wonderful. David is our neighbor and his book is beginning to get some really good national reviews. Also, I've high on Mary Johnson's An Unquenchable Thirst.
You may also enjoy Anne Lamontt's book, 'Bird by Bird' which is about writing. It is both helpful for a writer and enjoyable.
