“In the summer after my father died, I spent days unable to get out of bed. I had vivid nightmares of monstrous women lurching out of televisions or crammed into attics, bones cracking out of place. I had nightmares that I was monstrous too. I thought these dreams were further punishment, a reflection of who I had become. But now I wonder how much the things that scare us are always trying to form their own communities too.”
Zefyr Lisowski, It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror

“I asked my mother what she prayed for. It wasn't an end to her pain, as I or the countless well-wishers had assumed. She wished for just one thing, day after day, night after night: That her daughter wasn't afraid when she died.”
Zefyr Lisowski, Uncanny Valley Girls: A Memoir-in-Essays on Horror, Survival, and Love – From the Winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Poetry

“If you care enough about a person, after all, you can ignore almost any belief they hold. If you're devoted enough, a friend and a lover are nearly the same thing.”
Zefyr Lisowski, Uncanny Valley Girls: A Memoir-in-Essays on Horror, Survival, and Love – From the Winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Poetry
