One can flip through the book, choosing poems at random, but I advise reading them in order. Some collections are meant to be taken in the way the poet intends. By doing so, we move through this volume treated to a writer with an ear to the earthen, the bestial and the human, hearts beating within all.

There is a mystical presence hovering over much of the writing, but also an eroticism that borders on beatific. In “Conception” we are treated to something holy that can only occur in the aftermath of carnality. “Mountain Salve” reminds me of Walter Carlos Williams’s “This Is Just to Say”, not because Davis intended it to, or because plums figure in both, but because they are each expertly disguised love poems. The whole of the collection is scattered with these deftly-crafted recollections, like passionately scribbled notes left about the house for a lover to find when you’re away. But, it’s not all without rupture. “Like nettles in drought / and blue jay feathers in rain / neither of us gave / to the other,” Davis says in one short, alliteratively-titled poem about marital discord. Therein, the willfulness of quarrel, and the power of simile.

Faith, too, resonates, pious and pagan. “A black bear stands / on his two legs. // The image in which / we were made,” Davis insists. A genesis for all creeds. Elsewhere, there are environmentalist cris de coeur. These are never polemical or lecturing, only sad reckonings of the costs of progress. Even so, the poems are optimistic, woven not only with the ugliness of our ecological delinquency, but with a beauty that is regenerative.

The collection finishes with a long narrative that nods back to some of the best 20th Century poetry. At turns confessional and unapologetic, it recalls in its several pages, generations of mountain men and women; communal, hardscrabble lives; and the all-too-tenuous line between man and beast. Taken as a whole, these poems demand we embrace the world as it is, nurture it as we do our lovers, our children. And in turn, accept its gratitude.
