Charlie Nelms is a person of the soil. The fifth of eleven children born to subsistence farming parents who struggled to make a living on their little 40-acre farm in the Arkansas Delta, Charlie decided as a young boy picking cotton that education was the best route for escaping the dehumanizing effects of poverty and racism, which defined life for most Southern Blacks during the 1950s and 60s. With the constant encouragement and support of his parents, teachers, and mentors, he graduated high school and enrolled at Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal College, an historically black college in Pine Bluff, Arkansas where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy and Chemistry. With a fellowship from the Ford Foundation, Charlie spent two years as a doctoral fellow in Higher Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College.

A nationally recognized leader in higher education, Charlie has held numerous leadership positions in the academy, including chancellor at Indiana University East, University of Michigan-Flint, and North Carolina Central University. He also served as a vice president of the Indiana University system, a position from which he retired in 2007.

A philanthropist, HBCU advocate, mentor, and motivational speaker, Charlie serves on the board of numerous professional and community organizations committed to achieving higher levels of equity for historically disenfranchised peoples. Each year, more than two-dozen undergraduate students at four universities are recipients of scholarships from the Charlie and Jeanetta Scholarship Endowment. Charlie is one of the founders of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Millennium Leadership Initiative, established to identify and mentor future university leaders.
