Species – by Alison Brackenbury

Species

Sometimes they rise before me in the night,

the lemurs, eyes as bare and bright as moons,

the lizard, older than the afternoon,

the coral’s tender hands which sun bleached white.

Some are immense, the tiger, shot and still,

some thumbnail-sized, like Chile’s emerald frog

I never saw, and soon, nobody will.

Alison Brackenbury

James Joyce
“He wanted to cry quietly but not for himself: for the words, so beautiful and sad, like music.”
James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Anna Akhmatova
“You will hear thunder and remember me,
And think: she wanted storms. The rim
Of the sky will be the colour of hard crimson,
And your heart, as it was then, will be on fire.”
Anna Akhmatova, The Complete Poems of Anna Akhmatova

Charles Olson
“Whatever you have to say, leave
The roots on, let them
Dangle

And the dirt

Just to make clear
Where they come from.”
Charles Olson

A.A. Milne
“Well," said Pooh, "what I like best," and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn't know what it was called.”
A. A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

A.A. Milne
“Oh Tigger, where are your manners?"
