Ian and Elizabeth Macpherson (d. 1989) met at Aberdeen University, graduating in 1928. Much to the scandal of the time, they eloped. In 1931, having ‘said goodbye to caution’ they gave up academia to live by their wits in Scotland’s Badenoch country.

In Happy Hawkers Elizabeth recounts their first year of marriage and how they managed to survive during a time when unemployment without a welfare system was endemic..

The couple were to take a tenancy of a small upland farm in Morayshire where Ian combined farming with writing and broadcasting. He died in a motor cycle accident in 1944.
