Shalini is unparalleled for me in her intricate worldbuilding, gorgeous prose, intense political intrigue, and lines that take your breath away because they’re so real and timely. I felt every ounce of rage, injustice, and struggle as Kadra and Sarai tried to fix a broken system that didn’t want to be fixed. Sarai has been trying so hard to mend a broken world, and it’s a very thankless job. My heart breaks for how strong she has to be in doing the right thing even when it feels like everyone and everything is against her. KADRA!!!! Okay, so it’s no secret that I adored Kadra in This Monster of Mine, but I am here to tell you that I love him just as much–maybe more–in the sequel. There were just as many moments where I had to put the book down because I got CHILLS. I especially enjoyed getting more of Kadra’s backstory. If you know, you know. I adored Kadra and Sarai’s relationship in this book. Shalini does not shy away from morally gray characters who are ready to burn the world down for each other. I absolutely loved Sarai in the first book, but she continues to be a strong, vulnerable, and complex character in this one. I related to her desire to make people pay for the injustices and pain they’re inflicting upon others while also feeling concerned how that quest for power might ruin her. A new character in this book became a favorite of mine. I felt such empathy for this character and adored the complexity of their story. I will not forget this book for a long time because Shalini embraces unexpected paths with her characters and writes a world that feels so real and brutal, yet hopeful. I’d read any books set in this world and with these characters!

This is one of my favorite books I have ever read! So many lines gave me chills, and I had to take breaks after certain chapters to gush to my sister about how AWESOME the characters are in this book. Somehow Tracy Deonn took characters I absolutely love and leveled them up! Bree was a total badass. She has her usual complexity and empathy, but she was UNSTOPPABLE. Although I don’t remember any of the other books having a multi POV split, it worked so well in this one. I enjoyed getting to see through Nick and William’s POV for some chapters. Deonn crafts relatable, loveable characters so well, and it feels like going home when reading them.

I feel guilty saying this but I even kind of liked Erebus…of course he’s evil and manipulative and all of the things you don’t want in a teacher, but there was something about his interactions with Bree that I found so intriguing. His cruel methods pulled out the power in Bree and she became impervious and unstoppable, but in a different way than he did. She became that way through empathy and compassion.

This is a long book, but I read it faster than I read some shorter books because it was so genuinely enjoyable and engaging. Every chapter end had me racing to the next page. I adored the new characters Deonn introduced. The chemistry, both romantic and platonic, among all the characters was so well done. Bree’s memory loss could have been frustrating for the reader, but Deonn executed it so perfectly that it allowed for Bree to learn to care about and trust her friends all over again. The themes in this book are so powerful, and the explorations of grief, racism, and power dynamics are so compelling. This book is enjoyable and challenging and that is one of the most powerful things a book can do. It’s such a masterpiece! I cannot wait for the next one.
