Inventing the Renaissance by Ada Palmer
"I LOVE ADA AND I CANNOT LIE! A more sane review pending till I have the right mindspace for it, but it is so compulsively readable, so insightful and smart, and I have given away copies of this book as gifts to friends (especially historian friends) " Read more of this review »
Eva Müller is starting Death of a Bookseller: This starts with a "This book is from the past and the past was sometimes racist/sexist etc" which I never saw in a BCLC. Is this a new thing or does this mean this will be even worse than Sargent "the tits of this female corpse are ugly" Cuff books or that other one with the anti-Semitic rant that lasted an entire chapter?

"The fact that his book is so detailed is both a blessing and a curse. I don't really know a whole lot about the US in the late 19th century and this book paints a detailed picture of what life was like for various groups of people in the day. But I r" Read more of this review »

"A PR consultant struggling with the meaninglessness of life finds an answer in the postal service's union's struggle. Books about disaffected, depressed middle-class women are a genre unto themselves, but this is the first one to satisfy me. Long liv" Read more of this review »

The alternative history part is really cool but I had expected more crime story in an AU and this is more a (polit) thriller and I'm just not in the mood for that. Perhaps I'll give it another try at some point. ...more

Peter S. Beagle
“Her face was a stranger’s face, which was as it should be. Love each other from the day we are born to the day we die, we are still strangers every minute, and nobody should forget that, even though we have to. ”
Peter S. Beagle, The Innkeeper's Song

Carol Berg
“Books don't prattle. Books don't make demands. Yet they give you everything they possess. It's a very satisfying partnership.”
Carol Berg

Terry Pratchett
“They didn't know why these things were funny. Sometimes you laugh because you've got no more room for crying. Sometimes you laugh because table manners on a beach are funny. And sometimes you laugh because you're alive, when you really shouldn't be.”
Terry Pratchett, Nation

Noel Fielding
“Reality depresses me. I need to find fantasy worlds and escape in them.”
Noel Fielding

Jon Richardson
“I don't mean to hate people, I just get forced into it.”
Jon Richardson, It's Not Me, It's You

Yes that cover was what drew me to it as well (and ships...I like ships)

Kitty (I solemnly swear that I am up to no good) Only just saw your cute pawing kitten on my wall now and it is sooo frigging cute, thanks for accepting my request :)
