David Barzilay was educated in Kent and Scotland. After working for a national news agency, he trained with the Kent and Sussex Courier. He joined the Belfast Telegraph in 1969 and spent seven years in the province.

On his return to England, he became an information officer for Scotland Yard before joining a public relations consultancy.
