Celso Costa nasceu em 1949 no interior do estado do Paraná, e é matemático, educador e escritor. A sua carreira universitária começou em Curitiba, onde iniciou o curso de engenharia e depois o de medicina, sem no entanto se graduar em nenhuma dessas carreiras. Transferiu residência para o Rio de Janeiro em 1975, para estudar matemática no Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), onde concluiu o mestrado em 1977 e o doutoramento em 1982. A sua área de pesquisa em matemática é Geometria Diferencial. Na sua tese de doutoramento descobriu as equações de uma superfície mínima, a qual atualmente se designa por Superfície Costa ou Costa’s Surface, descoberta que resolveu um problema matemático com 206 anos de existência.
