I first read this book in college, and I recently revisited it to teach on it. It's cool to see things come full circle. Although I didn't love it when I first read it, I appreciated the writing and narrative, and having come back to read it a second I first read this book in college, and I recently revisited it to teach on it. Although I didn't love it when I first read it, I appreciated the writing and narrative, and having come back to read it a second time, I like it more than I did the first time around.

Things Fall Apart is a modern international classic. It covers the story of Okonkwo, a man of tradition reckoning with the reality of a changing world. He lives with a deep sense of honor, yet he grew up without any, his father a drunk and a debtor. This feeling of disgrace is important to the narrative, setup immediately by Achebe, and lays the groundwork for Okonkwo's final despair. It is his essential character, and it drives him throughout the story, driving him to beat his children, his wives. It drives him to fight against the missionaries. It drives him to conflict with his own tribe, and it drives him to despair.

The novel uses this vessel to explore some important ideas, considering tradition, mysticism and belief, the beliefs of different generations and people groups, and great men.

The novel begins by telling the story of Okonkwo, a great man by all accounts according to the novel. Western eyes may see it differently. It follows him, lays out his life, shows his feats and accomplishments, however, he is eventually driven out from his tribe to return home. It is without this great man that things fall apart. The traditions are ignored, even by his own children, his own wives. The old are trampled and the younger want change. It is on this weakness, that things fall apart, the novel critiquing not only "the white man" (I am using the language of the novel) and his behavior, but also the role of the native in failing to defend their traditions. It takes an even approach to a serious and contemporary issue.

It lays down a critique of Christianity at least, if not colonialism on the whole. It paints a picture of Christian theology (to which, I subscribe), spread by the missionaries, as being agents of destruction to the traditions that hold together the way of life of these tribes.

However, it also lays down this idea of change, that different generations will view the world differently. This may drive them away or may cause great conflict. Traditions may fall in the face of changing youth.

These combine to lay out the problem as Achebe sees it: the tribes allowed for their traditions to be destroyed (my note: for good or for ill). A quotation exemplifies this core idea:

"How can he when he does not even speak our tongue? But he says that our customs are bad; and our own brothers who have taken up this religion also say that our customs are bad. How do you think we can fight when our own brothers have turned against us? The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart."

While I disagree with Achebe in a religious sense, I appreciate the ideas he covers, as tradition and belief are universal. The classics of literature have a core trait: they tell us about people. Things Fall Apart explores that. It explores the world through a lens not western, and the book emphasizes this, as the white man simplifies the life of Okonkwo, revered as a great man, down to a mere chapter or perhaps only a paragraph. It targets the idea that the experiences of Africans are discounted, great men forgotten entirely, history wiped away and traditions discarded. It approaches the issue and provides a framework for why it happened, and it hints at what could have been made better. It lays everyone responsible: Okonkwo, the youth, the white man, the Christian, the elders, the women. All played a part in things falling apart.

Wherever one stands on that issue, Things Fall Apart offers important discussion and commentary around this idea and so is deserving of a 4/5. ...more

This isn't the first time I've tried to read through Huckleberry Finn, but it is the first time I've made it through it in its entirety. My first exposure to this American classic came through the show Family Ties in an episode where it addresses the issue of banned books in schools. That episode wasn't really about Huck Finn, but about whether students should be allowed to read certain books in school, but I thought it was about Huck Finn the story. In the same way that I thought Family Ties was talking about Huck, I also thought that Twain was writing with the purpose of addressing slavery, but the reality is that he wasn't.

Twain wrote with the honesty that only satire can pull off. It fills the pages through the masterfully written dialogue, every character and dialect unique, telling stories of a time and place different than my own. History requires us to accurately portray history. Twain, at least, did that. The honesty is seen in the adventures of Huck, a child growing into a man, with all the narrative authenticity that the perspective brings. Jim, perhaps not entirely representative, brings an adult wisdom that Huck fails to see. Huck wants an adventure and freedom, and so does Jim. Twain wrote with a pen aimed to address other issues, big at the time, although perhaps not what the 21st century reader first thinks about. Is Twain blinded by his time? Huck was; that’s a major point in the narrative. In either case, we simplify history, boiling it down to the issues we consider most important, forgetting that eras are rarely defined by one thing. Chaos theory makes this point clear.
No, Twain wrote to ridicule a whole host of things that weren’t slavery. He critiqued faith, citing examples of hypocrisy he witnessed in the church. He critiqued the violence of the culture with stories of gangs, criminals, feuds between the wealthy, the abundance of cons and liars, and murders in broad daylight. He ridiculed a romanticism towards the stories which the culture grew up that refused to take life seriously, glorifying violent heroes and daring escapes that didn’t teach people how to be truly heroic. This impacted the people, the culture.

Twain’s feelings toward slavery are not overtly clear through the narrative, nor is it clearly stated anywhere in the narrative of its evil, although it is difficult to read Huck Finn and think that Twain was supportive of the institution. He made his feelings clear both in word and action outside the narrative, but no less, Twain did not write Huck Finn primarily to address slavery. Instead, he critiqued those who looked at the Old South as the “good ol days”. This was a gilded age, the progress a thin veil hiding the rot of a society.

I have great respect for the writing and voice of Mark Twain’s characters. It is his strength, bar none. However, the rest of the story flags in comparison. Twain wrote to entertain, and so the stories feel episodic, moving from one adventure to the next. This serves a narrative purpose, but it doesn’t necessarily entertain me, a modern reader. Further, the dialect, masterfully written, is hard to read and enjoy at a personal level. It is ironic that Twain’s greatest strength serves as a barrier to enjoyment for me, but in some ways, it does. Twain shines in some spots, including the speech of Colonel Sherburn, Huck’s decision, and Jim’s revelation, but many other times it feels like we’re moving from one narrative point to another without any real goal or tension. Sure, Jim and Huck get into some sticky situations, some of those quite violent and with serious problems to solve, but the implication is always that there will be a happy ending. This all results in a narrative which feels a tad… flat to me.

In any case, it remains worthy of reading. The language is jarring and the dialogue is difficult. It isn’t the best example of American literature, but it is absolutely essential reading to understand this time and place, warts and all. ...more

Indeed, the name Leviathan, drawn from Job, give us an important view on the exact nature of Hobbes’ theory. They read as such: “If you lay a hand on it, you will remember the struggle and never do it again! Any hope of subduing it is false; the mere sight of it is overpowering. No one is fierce enough to rouse it. Who then is able to stand against me? Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.” What, then is this Leviathan? For Hobbes, this terrifying, irresistible power, this hand of God upon the working of the earth is the commonwealth, that sovereign institution of government, instituted by God and, according to Hobbes, the highest revelation of the will of God.

The Leviathan argues for the absolute sovereignty of the state, placing beneath it revelation, yet paradoxically arguing from that revelation, subordinating even the words of Christ under the sovereign as God’s lieutenant. Hobbes begins this discourse by laying a mechanistic and material universe. In Hobbes view, God is discrete material (incorporeal bodies are oxymoronic), moral law arises from natural reason (the foundation for peace as the highest good), seeking peace is the highest good (and conversely violence is the highest evil), and the state has absolute sovereignty directly from God (to, apparently, maintain peace).

Hobbes, in all of his careful efforts to systematically devise every possible way to solve the issue of the commands of God against the commands of the sovereign state, fails to avoid making several arbitrary statements about what constitutes truth. Prodigiously, he describes the nature of the Bible as a document that creates sedition and confusion, and therefore, private interpretations of it that counteract the mandate of the sovereign are thusly immoral. He lays as a foundation for salvation the statement, “You are the Christ, the Son of God” (from Peter), yet he states that the Bible itself is unreliable in its totality (excepting, of course, for this statement). Hobbes, in critiquing the two-masters issues of his time, religion and government, unwittingly becomes a slave to synthesizing two masters, the spiritual and the political, governmental and religion. The whole work seeks to reconcile these two fundamental differences which result in, according to Hobbes, violence, a return to his famed statement that man, in their natural state, exists in a state of perpetual warfare of all-against-all. Without government, there is violence… but also… with government there is violence?

Well, not in an ideal world, the likes of which Hobbes spends much of his time fantasizing about, but the great failure of Leviathan is in the nearsightedness of its presuppositions. He, like all of us, are a product of our times, and perhaps never have I finished studying a work and coming to the conclusion that history is absolutely essential to human advancement than I am now, because if Hobbes lived through the 20th century, he might not have so rigorously argued for an absolute, unchecked, and morally justified absolute sovereign who is morally imperfect yet is also totally morally justified. Hobbes’ Leviathan is indeed terrifying because it places the power of God into the hands of man. Forget Prometheus, Hobbes would be the first to give man the power of the gods. In the view of Hobbes’, Pol Pot would be morally justified in his regime, but even worse, the citizenry would be morally required to submit to that said regime, all in the name of what? Safety and an effort to avoid violence, believe it or not. (Mind you, he divorces these ideas from Christian hope and the eternal, so that is off the table)

Much like Das Kapital, time has demonstrated that political and economic theory continues to move forward, these old works remaining thoroughly antiquated upon reading them within a modern context.

Hobbes, living through the civil wars of 17th century England, was a product of his time and dealt with the issues of his time. I think of the immortal words of J.R.R Tolkien, “’I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo. ‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’” Hobbes lived in view of the issues and violence of his time, one propagated in part by the religious issues of his time, and so he reacted to it in the way Anakin would: “I don’t think the system works.”

That, however, does not mean they are without value. Hobbes makes important distinctions about the nature of man and the impossibility of self-governance due to man’s self-interest (as due to sin). Hobbes stands upon giants, and giants stand upon him, both in the positive and in the negative. John Locke reacted strongly against Hobbes, and in turn, much of what makes up the U.S. Constitution exists in part due to the theorizing of Hobbes.

Hobbes also emphasizes the potential benefits of a strong, centralized regime. The lack of power of weaker governments can produce great violence and anarchy, perhaps an issue remedied by a stronger government, yet, that same government is imperfect, flawed, and human. Churchill recognized the inherent issue of government when he says, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried.” Churchill himself dealt with the weaknesses of a decentralized government where he fought tirelessly to defeat the Nazi’s even as characters like Neville Chamberlain tried to maintain an even more costly peace. Plato also critiqued democracy, citing that demagogues with only an aptitude for winning elections would come to dominate the political scene (sound familiar?). The overwhelming conclusion is that there are practical issues that perhaps cannot be solved.

What exactly would Hobbes have to say about such a practical issue? Based upon the Leviathan, whatever the sovereign, headed by people, does is good even as Hobbes agrees in the other direction that human nature leads mankind to a state of perpetual war of all-against-all. He’d probably say that the sovereign is maintaining peace, even if that peace is terrifying.

It makes me think of Joker’s philosophically intriguing description of plans: “Nobody panics when things go ‘according to plan.’ Even if the plan is horrifying!” Is Hobbes’ plan horrifying? Absolutely. Dependence upon people (and by extension government) for peace and prosperity is a foolish endeavor, for power corrupts. That same film, The Dark Knight spotlights this idea. Harvey Dent tells us that in times of emergency, a ruler should be appointed (such as Julius Caesar in his ascension to rulership), highlighting the need for power in times of drastic action, yet the counterargument is made that he never gave up that power, and so, he says, “You either die the hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” Government is not a proper integration point for moral law, and it isn’t even a proper integration point for true peace and prosperity, that can only come through something greater than ourselves, the critical error that Hobbes misses in his dialectic.

People are insufficient to solve the problems of sin, and all have fallen.

Quite simply, we need Jesus because Hobbes got at least this much right, that man is in a state of perpetual warfare, and if Hobbes unwittingly tells us that, I consider it a win.

Read history everybody, or we’ll make the same mistakes that Hobbes failed to see here. ...more
