Russell Meagher was born in West London in 1962. He studied Economics at the University of Southampton and then joined the insurance brokers, Willis Faber, as a graduate trainee. After seven years at Willis, he took a career break and spent the next 14 months travelling the world with his girlfriend, Lucinda. On their return, they married, moved from London to Sussex and had three daughters. Russell joined the global insurer AIG in 2002 and was there during the events of 2008 when AIG's ill-judged foray into Credit Default Swaps allowed the US government to use it as a conduit to bail out the Wall Street banks.
