"This book is unlike anything I've ever read or expected to ever read and here's why I think that and why I think very specific people may want to give it a chance too.

Usually lovecraftian horror relies and focuses on the fear of the unknown or just " Read more of this review »

Why I Read This:
People are always recommending Iain M. Banks and after having a mixed experience with Consider Phlebas, (and disliking The Wasp Factory), I thought I’d try The Algebraist.

Why I Read This:
I have gone off dystopian fiction in recent years but saw this novel frequently recommended on BookTube. It is a short book and, at the end of the year, when life gets busy, a short book is a good book.

More of Sarah's books…
Ursula K. Le Guin
“I think," Tehanu said in her soft, strange voice, "that when I die, I can breathe back the breath that made me live. I can give back to the world all that I didn't do. All that I might have been and couldn't be. All the choices I didn't make. All the things I lost and spent and wasted. I can give them back to the world. To the lives that haven't been lived yet. That will be my gift back to the world that gave me the life I did live, the love I loved, the breath I breathed.”
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Other Wind

Evelyn Waugh
“I knew what she meant, and in that moment felt as though I had shaken off some of the dust and grit of ten dry years; then and always, however she spoke to me, in half sentences, single words, stock phrases of contemporary jargon, in scarcely perceptible movements of eyes or lips or hands, however inexpressible her thought, however quick and far it had glanced from the matter in hand, however deep it had plunged, as it often did, straight from the surface to the depths, I knew; even that day when I still stood on the extreme verge of love, I knew what she meant.”
Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited

Gene Wolfe
“There are encounters that change nothing. Urth turns her aged face to the sun and he beams upon her snows; they scintillate and coruscate until each little point of ice hanging from the swelling sides of the towers seems the Claw of the Conciliator, the most precious of gems. Then everyone except the wisest believes that the snow must melt and give way to a protracted summer beyond summer.”
Gene Wolfe, The Complete Book of the New Sun

Marcus Aurelius
“The soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts.”
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Sarah Balstrup A NOTE ON MY REVIEWS:
As a writer, I like to read widely – for pleasure, for research or for curiosity alone.
My reviews tell you why I read the book and the impression it left on me. I include a section called 'Craft Related Notes' to make sure I am paying attention to the techniques the writer used. After all, every book is a teacher.

STAR RATINGS:
I don't use star ratings as I would only be rating books in relation to my taste. I have the greatest respect for anyone who can get a book to publication and think my comments are much more useful in conveying what I thought of a book.

If you want to know which books left the biggest impression on me, see 'Absolute Favourites.'
