Steven Paulsen is an award-winning speculative fiction writer. His bestselling children’s book, The Stray Cat (Lothian/Hachette), illustrated by Hugo and Oscar Award winning artist Shaun Tan, has seen publication in several English and foreign language editions. His short stories have appeared in publications around the world, the best of which are collected in Shadows on the Wall (IFWG Publishing Australia, 2018), which won the Australian Horror Writers Association Shadows Award for Best Collected Work. His historical fantasy novel, Dream Weaver, set in 15th century Ottoman Turkey, was released to positive reviews in September 2023. A fun quick read. But Kilworth is a much better writer than this movie tie-in. Lots of exposition in the writing but I guess he was constrained and instructed by the movie people. Enjoyable nevertheless.

I can see why they didn’t choose this book for the Reacher TV series. Pacing issues, flat spots, boring in places. Okay, but not great.

I am a fan of both Tim Powers’ writing, spy novels and history, but despite the wonderful writing this novel was not compelling for me. And although it’s clever and award nominated and winning, I don’t think it’s Powers’ best work.
