There was about 70% more book than there should have been. I feel like Melville just wanted to speak about everything he’d ever learned and experienced while whaling and he’d go on long passionate tangents about these things. It helped to think of th ...more |

"The Listeners is a novel that is nowhere near as interesting as it thinks it is. For all its historical detail and sumptuous descriptions, its story doesn't amount to very much in the end. Here I am, having read all 400 pages of this novel, and yet I"

“We're on the highway!" Jess reports after a few minutes. "What lane should I be in?"
"The slow one."
"Which one is that?"
As far as rescue efforts go, we're less like Charlie's Angels and more like something Rowan Atkinson would star in. Someone hoots and speeds around us.
"The other one," I suggest.
Jess indicates and changes lanes with a little yelp.”

“You are a coward."
"I know that!" He waves his arms, and the air shimmers around them. "But I was trying to do what was right. Could you not permit me to do one thing right in the entirety of my existence?”

“He smiles. His cheeks dimple and he ducks his chin and laughs. The sound flushes through me like hot chocolate. It's light glinting off water, a forest pool. It's the sound of me losing my heart.”

“His face is close to mine and he's radiating heat. I can't look at him because if I do I'm afraid I'll snuggle into him.
He tilts up my chin. His eyes are filled with concern. "Are you angry?"
It's not anger that's pumping through me. The feeling is kind of like that first glass of whiskey. It burns in my chest, warms my stomach, makes me a bit queasy.”

“The smell of paper is comforting and the books absorb the sound of the traffic outside. I feel like I'm back in the school library, taking refuge from the popular girls who'd tease me about how pale and strange I was. Familiar friends sit on these shelves, many boasting new jackets in the latest styles. I say hello and silently apologise to the few that are now wearing movie poster covers. No book deserves that.”
