Xela Arias Castaño veu ao mundo no ano 1962 en Lugo, embora pasase a maior parte da súa vida en Vigo, cidade en que realizou os estudos de Filoloxía Hispánica e onde morreu o 2 de Novembro de 2003. Vinculada a Xerais desde o nacemento da editorial en 1979, estreouse no mundo literario con Denuncia do equilibrio (1986), poemario innovador co que foi finalista do Premio Losada Diéguez. En 1990 publicou, en colaboración co seu marido e fotógrafo Xulio Gil, Tigres coma cabalos, obra de grande repercusión en que se mesturan poemas e espidos da autora.
