I write unsettling stories from my tiny farm in rural New Mexico. I'm working on a four-book collection (one for each season) wherein the people who incautiously choose the rural life suffer tragically. I like my novels like the far side of the moon: dark, lonely, and unforgiving.

"Melpomene Now" a contest winner

Dear Buffs,

My sci-fi flash fiction Melpomene Now is a winner of the Horizon 2040 Influence & Anarchy contest. It's the story of a family 15 years in the future each engaging with their AI-enabled Muse earpieces and awaiting M Corp's announcement of Muse's latest feature. Society will never be the same. Check it out here: https://horizon-2040.com. It will be published in the Small Wars Journal.

I loved how plainly everyone spoke to each other (even though they were nerdy wordies). The plot did not succeed merely because everyone refused to ask the obvious questions, which I appreciate.

This gave me a YA vibe similar to Marisha Pessl's Darkly.

I may have been skimming at the end. Did we ever learn?:

What a great story. The writing was a little uneven. This was my favorite line: "What's a food processor?" "It's some kind of a blender for summer people." ...more

“...we sang in church "Tata Nzolo"! Which means Father in Heaven or Father of Fish Bait depending on just how you sing it, and that pretty well summed up my quandry.”

Katherine Neville
“Nim unwrapped a loaf of fresh dilled rye bread and opened a crock of trout mousse. He slathered up a big slice and handed it to me. [...] We had thinly sliced veal smothered in kumquat sauce, fresh spinach with pine nuts, and fat red beefsteak tomatoes (impossibly rare at this time of year) broiled and stuffed with lemon apple sauce. The wide, fan-shaped mushrooms were sauteed lightly and served as a side dish. The main course was followed by a salad of red and green baby lettuce with dandelion greens and toasted hazelnuts.”

“Each Javelin round costs $80,000, and the idea that it's fired by a guy who doesn't make that in a year at a guy who doesn't make that in a lifetime is somehow so outrageous it almost makes the war seem winnable.”
