| I loved this. Alex Lemon’s use of language, imagery, and music is inventive, lush, and visceral. Reading this collection felt like wandering through a fever dream, in the best possible way. These poems demand that you slow down and inhabit them. | |
“My heart is a cathedral. Widows, ghosts and lovers sit and sing in the dark, arched marrow of me.”

“Not just beautiful, though--the stars are like the trees in the forest, alive and breathing. And they're watching me.”
― Kafka on the Shore

“You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.”

“There is an ancient conversation going on between mosses and rocks, poetry to be sure. About light and shadow and the drift of continents. This is what has been called the "dialect of moss on stone - an interface of immensity and minute ness, of past and present, softness and hardness, stillness and vibrancy, yin and yan.”
