Author Nicholas Hanna is a fan of classic gothic horror stories, so when he decided to write a science fiction mystery thriller for young adults, he split the story’s setting between contemporary New York City and a gothic-style castle upstate. The result is The Paradox of Heroes, a novel in which the protagonists—and the reader—must navigate their way through a series of deadly challenges.

Interestingly, the idea for Hanna’s book came from a dream in which he was trapped in a dark room that was filling up with water, and the only light coming from a keypad into which he had to enter the correct answer to a problem that was carved on the wall in order to escape the room.
