In the mid-90s, when I spent a year travelling across the United States, I fell in love with the wide variety of chilies there. At that time in South Africa all you could get were hot red or hot green ones. If I wanted the jalapenos, habaneros and serranos, I realised I had to grow them, even if I'd never grown a thing before. Back home, I dug up some lawn, threw in some compost and sowed a handful of seeds. That summer I had more than 20 varieties of delicious chilies.
